Same Great Event, New Name. Blue Lakes now Tikitapu

This season, Canoe Racing New Zealand’s Blue Lake regattas will have a new name. Blue Lake 1 and 2 will now be known as Tikitapu 1 and Tikitapu 2, as part of our agreement to use the lake with the local iwi.

Tom Ashley, CRNZ Chief Executive, is excited to hold the “same great events with a new name”.

“We are grateful to have access to such beautiful water to paddle on.”

To mark the event’s new name, a local kaumātua has been invited to bless the lake before the start of Tikitapu 1.

The Te Arawa Lakes Trust was established to represent the interests of Te Arawa hapū and iwi members.

Lake Tikitapu sits alongside the Lakebeds of thirteen Lakes in the Te Arawa Lakes Trust.

The popular paddling double will this year take place on October 15 / 16 (Tikitapu 1) and then December 3 / 4 (Tikitapu 2).

Tikitapu 1  has a fun development focus, consisting of a divisional format for K1 races where competitors will be seeded into divisions based on registered 200m times, for each gender.
