Update to the CRNZ 2022 Asia Pacific Cup Selection Policy

Due to the extenuating circumstances surrounding COVID-19, CRNZ had initially decided not to send an Asia Pacific team to race in Komatsu, Japan. After much deliberation and discussion with the Australian and Japanese Canoe federations, we were able to agree on a change of date for the event (29th September – 2nd October).

This change of date along with the New Zealand Government’s elimination of MIQ and easing of travel restrictions have allowed us to announce new plans and select a team to compete at the 2022 Asia Pacific Cup.

Please note that we will continue with our original plan to select athletes for the Asia Pacific campaign as set out in our original policy, however we will also take a travelling team consisting of the following Age Groups and team sizes:

  • U18 – Up to 6 WK athletes and up to 6 MK athltetes
  • U21 – Up to 4 WK athletes and up to 4 MK athletes
  • U16 Athletes will still be selected to the Asia Pacific Campaign and will take part in the published domestic camps and competition.
  • We will not be sending a U16 team to Japan, however, U16 athletes that race in the U18 category at Nationals may eligible for nomination.

This addendum modifies, where relevant, the Asia Pacific Cup Selection Policy (see clauses 1.6, 3.2) It is to be read in conjunction with the published policy. See full addendum here.

COVID and World Cup Travel
: While we have published the selection policy for the World Cup tour, due to the unpredictable nature of the COVID pandemic, a decision has not yet been made as to whether CRNZ will send a team to race in Europe. This is primarily due to the risks around European travel and the uncertainties of obtaining MIQ spots in early June. As soon as a final decision is made, we will communicate it to the membership.

If there are any questions related to the selection policies, please contact, Nathan Luce, CRNZ General Manager of Performance.

Auckland 2022 Ocean Racing World Championships cancelled

23 September 2021

Unfortunately, due to border closures and ongoing uncertainty related to the Covid-19 pandemic, Canoe Racing New Zealand (CRNZ) and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) have agreed that the 2022 ICF Ocean Racing World Championships planned to be held in Takapuna, Auckland cannot realistically go ahead . As such, the 2022 event in Auckland has been cancelled.

To hold a viable World Champs requires a fully open New Zealand border for at least several months in advance of the event. As Government advice has indicated this to be unlikely, we considered it best to cancel early to give the ICF and the new host plenty of time to organise the 2022 event. The ICF is working with other potential host nations on an alternative venue, which will be decided and announced as soon as possible.

This will be disappointing news to the Kiwi paddling community, and to surfski paddlers from around the globe who were looking forward to visiting Aotearoa and paddling on the beautiful Waitematā and Hauraki Gulf. CRNZ and the ICF are discussing the possibility of hosting the World Champs in Auckland in 2025. We hope to have confirmation of this new date in late 2021.
