The winner of successive World Championship medals, New Zealand’s leading Para-canoeist will have designs later this year on banking a podium spot at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Born and raised in Christchurch, Scott was a talented all-round sportsman, competing in both surf lifesaving and kayak but his life was to change at the age of 17 after receiving a knock on a thigh in a rugby game. The resulting bruise become infected and he developed the flesh eating disease, necrotising fasciitis. Surgeons saved his life but had to amputate his left leg.
He returned to the sport and tried his hand at Para-canoe.. He quickly adapted to life in the kayak and competing as a KL3 athlete qualified for the 2016 Tokyo Paralympic Games, finishing eighth in the 200m final.
In late 2018 he was reclassified into the KL2 division – for athletes with a more severe disability – and he went on to win KL2 200m silver at the World Championships.
Last year the Leigh Barker-coached athlete, who trains on the Avon River in Christchurch, claimed a gold medal in the KL2 200m at the World Cup in Poznan. He then added World Championship bronze to his growing CV at the World Championship in Szeged.
Scott is a keen fan of all sports and works as an estimator.
