ICF Junior & U23 World Champs; Day 1 Wrap Up & Day 2 Race Schedule

Kiwi’s make a strong start in Day 1 of ICF Canoe Sprint Junior & U23 World Championships in picturesque Auronzo, Italy.

The New Zealand men made the first splash of the competition in the Junior K2 1000m and Under 23 K4 500m.

Steve Vaughan, Team Manager who is on the ground with the Kiwi team said, “It’s the most incredible venue, we have been treated to a fantastic first day of racing with 6 of our 12 strong team dipping their toes into a great first day of racing”.
First up Tiago Chamberlain and Logan Ferguson made their debut on the World Championship stage in the Junior K2 1000m, with a solid 5th in a strong heat to advance to their semi-final where they finished a tight 7th and just missed out on making a B-final at their first attempt.

The other crew in action on day one were the U23 K4 Men (Daniel Brown, Grant Clancy, Fletcher Moles and Kacey Ngataki) who competed in the 500m distance. In an incredibly tough heat the crew finished a respectable 6th to advance to the semi-final. The crew threw out a big challenge to the race early, pressing hard and held on in the back half to secure an awesome 7th place, qualifying for the B-Final to be raced on Friday.

The women finished their final race preparations and are excited to get out on the pristine Auronzo water and compete tonight NZT, see race schedule below.

“The team all feel grateful for the opportunity to race on the world stage in these incredible conditions and the efforts today bode well for the remainder of the week as our athletes represent New Zealand Canoe Racing NZ and our paddling community and are sure to make you all proud,” Steve Vaughan.

Racing continues over the next 4 days, with almost the full Kiwi crew competing today in Day 2 of competition.
