The 2021 Kahawai Paddling Championships – a brand new Canoe Racing NZ event designed to develop the next generation of paddlers – will be held on Saturday May 8 at Takapuna Beach in Auckland.
The inaugural competition is open to all paddlers of intermediate or high school age, and all equipment and craft will be provided by organisers. It is hoped the competition will attract paddlers from a range of levels and backgrounds; sprint, surf lifesaving, ocean or multisport.
The event will adopt the new Kahawai competition on one of the Paddler-X courses – see more about the format here
Heats of 4-12 paddlers race from a start line, around one or more buoys and back to a finish line adjacent to the start. Races can take anywhere from 2-5 minutes, and every paddler will compete in several races as they progress from heats through to division finals
Depending on participant numbers, there may also be a long-distance race option available in the afternoon.
Participants will be separated into age groups as follows:
- • Under 12 years
- • Under 14 years
- • under 16 years
- • under 18 years
