Day 2 World Champs Wrap: Carrington Chases Down 13th World Title

Day 2 of the ICF Canoe Sprint & Paracanoe World Championships started with Dame Lisa Carrington facing a close battle in the K1 200m. Australian paddler Yale Steinepreis edged Carrington by 0.42 seconds to claim the heat win. 

 

Carrington has won the women’s K1 200m World title eight times and will be looking to make a strong statement in the semi final.

 

Aimee Fisher and Danielle McKenzie made an impressive debut in the Women’s K2 500m heats.

 

Having spent only weeks preparing, in their first ever competitive race the new pair worked seamlessly to claim second place. Securing a semi final spot where the crowd will be eagerly waiting to see what the pair can lay down for their second performance.

 

In the Paracanoe VL3 200m class Peter Cowan came second in a very tight heat race, and teammate Scott Martlew claimed fifth place in his heat. Both are looking competitive coming into tomorrow’s semi finals.

 

In the semi final action, Lisa Carrington rounded out her day with a dominant semi final win in the K1 Women 500m, crossing the line over a second faster than the second place paddler. 

 

 

Carrington will be looking to claim her 13th world championship title in the A final on Saturday at 10.21pm NZT.

 

Ashton Reiser placed 8th in his K1 Men 200m semi final, seeing him through to the C Final on Saturday.

 

 

In the Men’s K1 1000m semi finals Quaid Thompson placed sixth, he will race the C Final on Saturday.

 

The World Championships action is only just getting started, with Day 3 seeing the first of the finals starting from tonight 7pm NZT.
