Auckland 2022 Ocean Racing World Championship cancelled

Unfortunately, due to border closures and ongoing uncertainty related to the Covid-19 pandemic, Canoe Racing New Zealand (CRNZ) and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) have agreed that the 2022 ICF Ocean Racing World Championships planned to be held in Takapuna, Auckland cannot realistically go ahead . As such, the 2022 event in Auckland has been cancelled.

To hold a viable World Champs requires a fully open New Zealand border for at least several months in advance of the event. As Government advice has indicated this to be unlikely, we considered it best to cancel early to give the ICF and the new host plenty of time to organise the 2022 event. The ICF is working with other potential host nations on an alternative venue, which will be decided and announced as soon as possible.

This will be disappointing news to the Kiwi paddling community, and to surfski paddlers from around the globe who were looking forward to visiting Aotearoa and paddling on the beautiful Waitematā and Hauraki Gulf. CRNZ and the ICF are discussing the possibility of hosting the World Champs in Auckland in 2025. We hope to have confirmation of this new date in late 2021.
