Born the eldest of three sisters into a sporting family from Dunedin, Lucy joined the St Clair Surf Life Saving Club at the age of six.
Later developing into a national ski medallist and featuring as an age-group representative at basketball, at the age of 14 she decided to pursue a new sporting avenue and selected the sport of kayaking.
Encouraged by reaching national finals as an under-16 paddler, she later started to take the sport more seriously and made a big leap forward under her then coach Brendan O’Neill in 2018.
That year she made her international debut for New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Cup in Adelaide and competed at the World Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where she advanced to the semi-finals as part of the K4 500m crew.
In 2019 – while taking up an academic scholarship to study a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biochemistry at the University of Otago – she continued to impress winning five medals at the Asia Pacific Cup on Lake Karapiro.
After placing seventh in the K1 200m and sixth in the K1 500m at the 2020 New Zealand Champs she was called up to join the Auckland-based New Zealand women’s squad.
