UPDATE: Friday 1st August

The National Advisory for the North and South Islands has been lifted, although strong and unusual currents will continue for the next 20 to 48 hours. The National Advisory for a beach and marine threat remains in place for the Chatham Islands.

It is safe to return to coastal waters for paddling, but please be aware of strong and unusual currents. Happy and safe paddling!

A National Advisory of Tsunami Activity has been put in place in New Zealand today (Wednesday 30 July).

As a result of this morning’s magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Russia, the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) is warning that it expects all New Zealand coastal areas to experience “strong and unusual currents” and unpredictable surges overnight.
The current earliest estimated wave arrival time in around midnight (East Cape). Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges will continue for several hours and the threat must be regarded as real.

There is a danger anyone in, on or near the water close to shore during this time.
“People in or near the sea in the following areas should move out of the water, off beaches and shore areas and away from harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries,” Nema said.
If you are planning a paddle in a coastal waterway tomorrow (Thursday 31 July), please check it is safe to do so before heading out. If the advisory/warnings are still in place, do not paddle or relocate to a non-affected waterway such as a lake.
