Canoe Racing New Zealand are pleased to announce that Gavin “Gav” Elmiger has been promoted from part‑time Development Coach to Performance Coach with the CRNZ Elite Team, effective 9 February 2026.
Gav has been a constant presence in our paddling community for many years – supporting athletes and coaches alike with his calm leadership, technical clarity, and deep care for the people behind the performances.
In this new role, he will work as a key member of our Elite coaching group to:
- lead daily training environments and race preparation for targeted elite crews,
- strengthen the bridge from development to elite by aligning technical models and culture, and
- contribute toward the upcoming World Championships, LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032.
CRNZ CEO Graham Oberlin-Brown commented “Gav has earned this step through years of steady, athlete‑centred coaching. He brings significant international and domestic experience; clarity, humility, and a team‑first approach that lifts the standard every day. His appointment strengthens the connection from our pathway into the Elite programme and supports our ambitions through the next cycle to LA 2028.”
