Aimee Fisher’s gold medal in the K1 1000m was the highlight of the 2025 ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup in Szeged over the weekend but there were lots of other great results from New Zealand team as they competed at their first international event of the Los Angeles Olympic cycle.
The selected world cup team features both experienced international paddlers including some the of heroes of the2024 Olympics as well as a few new names wearing the silver fern at open international events. There were new crew combinations racing for the first time together, including the gold medal winning NZ Women’s K4 who were without Lisa Carrington. All crews put forward some solid results which they will build upon for the rest of this season and over the next 3 years.
“We saw some really promising performances in Szeged to start the new Olympic cycle.” said Nathan Luce, CRNZ General Manager of Performance.
“Aimee’s gold in the K1 1000m was a highlight, and her 4th place in the K1 500m, showed she’s right in the mix with the world’s best.”
“The women’s K4 of Olivia, Alicia, Tara and Lucy also put down a world-class performance, challenging for the podium the whole way. Our men’s K2 of Grant and Kacey made a confident debut with a 2nd in the B Final (11th overall). These are strong foundations to build on as we head toward LA 2028.”
“We’re building a squad with depth and potential, exactly what’s needed to be competitive in LA.”
“I’m proud of the entire team, athletes and staff, for the way they approached this regatta. From a medal-winning performance to breakthrough moments and hard lessons, this was a weekend that gave us exactly what we need at this stage of the journey. Huge thanks to our coaching and support crew for keeping everything moving behind the scenes.”
The team have quickly shifted their focus to the next World Cup in Poznan which begins Thursday (22nd May) and runs through until Sunday. This world cup also features Paracanoe racing and will see the international debut of Finn Murphy.
