Waitara 10km Race

Waitara 10km Race

2015 Waitara.jpg

A fresh sunny morning greeted paddlers for the annual 10 k race at the Waitara river in Taranaki, again well supported by the local club and neighbouring Whanganui. Conditions were good, with a tail wind assisting the flow making a fast run to the bottom mark, while the start of the white bait season gave something to dodge going up the eddy to the top mark.

Thomas Cole led the start with Rebecca Cole, Ben McCallum and Brian Scott among the front bunch leading their respective categories. The tide turned after the first lap steepening the swell and set up some good runners for paddlers after rounding the bottom turn.

Ben McCallum charged home to win the U16 with Whanganui’s Cambell Tanner taking out 2nd followed by Max McCallum.
Through the final lap of the 10 km event U18’s Thomas Cole and Gregor Park shed the last of the tenacious Masters paddlers with Thomas taking out the win and Gregor Park seconds behind. Brian Scott had a solid paddle sticking like glue to the young guys to take out the Masters category. Rebecca Cole not too far off the lead bunch was first Open woman home finishing with a charge.

Thank you to those who turned up, the members of Waitara Kayak club and CRNZ. The race fees were donated to Whanganui Kayak Club as the recent floods destroyed much of the club rooms as well as their fleet of boats. We hope this goes someway to rebuilding as you have built a club to be proud over the recent years thanks to the leadership of Brian.
