Coaching Conference 2014

Coaching Conference 2014

Canoe Racing New Zealand hosted the 2014 Coaching Conference from 21 – 23 March in Auckland.

The conference was made possible thanks to the generous support of the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC), via a special funding opportunity called  “Olympic Solidarity” which supports National programme activities.

The conference theme for this year was: “Quality coaches, quality sport”, and primarily focused on providing coaches with practical information and tools to develop, expand and improve not only their training programmes, but also gain a better understanding of the development pathways for their paddlers, and how to monitor their progress and their recovery.

A strong contingent of 20 club coaches started the conference on Friday afternoon, in a class-learning environment. CRNZ staff: Gordon Walker, Andras Szabo, Grant Restall and myself, supported by High Performance New Zealand Consultants and Advisors delivered over two and half days, presentations and workshops on:

  •         Coaching Philosophies
  •          Training philosophies
  •          Training zones and rating
  •          Fundamental of technique
  •          Pathways for athletes and opportunities
  •          Recovery

And plenty more...

The conference was a great opportunity to create a more collaborative opportunity between the club coaches as well as for CRNZ to take on board some of the comments and challenges our Club coaches are facing in their daily volunteer work at the Clubs.

I am particularly proud of the success of this initiative. The progress our coaches have made leaves me confident enough to say “we are heading to the right direction” and hopefully Sport Development has had a little contribution to that.

2014 coaching conf-4.jpgAlthough I am leaving my position with Canoe Racing, in few weeks time, I am grateful, I had the opportunity and pleasure over the past years, to work with such a fantastic group of passionate, hard-working and enthusiastic people, with a true passion, for this sport.

A BIG THANK YOU goes to all the coaches, paddlers, officials, parents, HPSNZ staff, AUT coaching staff, CRNZ staff and in general all the fantastic paddling community, that have supported Sport Development over the past two years.
