Scott Martlew claimed the first medal of the international season with a silver in the KL2 200 after being beaten by the slimmest of margins by Curtis McGrath of Australia.  He was just 0.16 seconds shy of the gold. This is a great start to the Kiwis World Cup campaign for 2018.  He takes to the water again on Saturday in the VL3 200.

The ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup 1 also saw the 9-strong women's team kick into gear with the K1 500 and 1000m events and the K2 500.

It was Danielle Watson's first senior international event.  She performed well, just missing the AF in the K1 1000 and showing great stamina, racing three very close 1000m races (less than an hour separating two of them) to finish second in her B Final.    Rebecca Cole and Caitlin Ryan both progressed to semis with these being raced on Saturday.

Lisa Carrington teamed up with Kayla Imrie in the K2 500 showing their class and easily winning their heat to progress straight through to the Final.   Caitlin Ryan and Aimee Fisher were top qualifiers in the B final.

Saturday's racing begins for the New Zealanders at 8.10am (6.10pm NZ time) with Carrington and Fisher's first run at the K2 200.
