Kayak Krazy 10km Series

Wanganui, 12 June 2012

Aaron Cox reports....

I had a call from Mike Tate at about 11am asking what’s the weather like in Wanganui ? What was I to say?...  Hot and sunny as per usual!

By the time athletes started to turn up for racing, we had a slight side wind in otherwise flat conditions on a high tide for racing on the river. We had set a 2km course so we were able to race a 2km one-lap, 6km three laps for our entry level events; and the 10km five laps for those looking for series points.

It was a fair start with everyone lined up even, until the gun went - then things changed quickly with three or four athletes trying to stamp their mark by gaining a couple of quick boat lengths with the rest of us following at varying distances behind in their wake. There were bunches or twos and threes hugging the bank with the upstream start, looking to see where the top turn was before heading down stream.  With a variety of abilities and craft on the water it was going to be an interesting afternoon.

For the next 45 minutes for fast guys or 60mins for those wanting to get more bang for their buck, we paddled around in circles watching what was evolving around us on the water ... looking to see who was tiring or who was trying to make a move on their fellow competitors. Gaps began to open and close-as tactics were tried and a rhythm maintained that would get us to the end.

Eventually the event was won by Glenn Muirhead with Adam Frazer getting a good workout  for second after pulling away from Ryan Welch early on in the race who finished third. Check out the results for further details.

Thanks to Karen at CNRZ and to all of the helpers who set the course, provided the home baking and assisted with the event on the day and those who travelled to Wanganui to compete or support. See you all next year!
