Near record turnout at Waitemata despite gloomy forecast. Saturday 23 May 2015

The weather outlook for Saturday signalled the end of the golden weather. Whilst it turned out not quite as bad as forecast it nevertheless was very wet under a heavy, black sky. Thankfully, the forecast strong wind stayed away from Henderson Creek.

As expected a small number of paddlers who had entered did not turn up on the morning, but to everyone’s surprise we still had a near-record turnout with 48 paddlers taking part.

Andrew Mowlem from Waitemata Canoe & Multisport blitzed the 10km in 44:49, while U16 Sean McCarthy from Karapiro took out the 5km in 24:21. Aotea Clifton won the Tyro 3km in 18.28, ahead of Stella Trevett/Alia Robertson in a K2, and Louis Evison.

Less than two minutes behind Andrew was Jordan McLarin, taking first place in the U18 category, no doubt working hard to be ahead of his father and mentor Simon McLarin, who took first place in the Masters K1 category. Looks like hard training and keen rivalry between father and son is starting to show dividends for Jordan.

First female in K1 were Samalulu Clifton in the U16 category, and Rochelle Austin in U18. Diana Austin was the only entry in the Masters Female category, as were Phill Exeter and Bruce Stuart in the K2 Masters.

A big thank you to all competitors and supporters who braved the steady rain, to Diana Austin for her efficiency in sending entry details for NSCC, Luke Austin for taking and supplying some photographs, Heather Davidson for timing and administration, and to Phill for organising the food, including hot soup and sausages.

Club president Vaughan Reed drove the rescue boat and officiated at the prize-giving.
