Results and race report from Waitara's leg of the Kayak Krazy 10km series.

Race report, thanks to Cathy Wilson

Although all eyes have been on the Olympics, this weekend was Waitara’s chance to host the Krazy Kayak 10k series on the Waitara River and we had some great racing of our own.  It was a good turn out with 28 competitors showing up. North shore, Wanganui and of course the home club Waitara, fronted for this event.  It was great to see some hard-core North Shore paddlers make the trek all the way over to the Naki to compete.

Forecasts for rain and strong winds loomed over the racers, but it was delightful to see the sun was peaking through the clouds on this typical, cold, windy New Plymouth afternoon. Luckily the rain held off with only a brief shower in the later laps of the event drenching onlookers. Despite the conditions the athletes were on the water and ready to start at 4pm.

We had just one Tyro, Anna Clifton, (U13) front and it was great to see such a young paddler coming to this event and luckily not deterred by the tricky mass start. She completed 2 laps, the U16’s completed three laps and the rest five laps.  Tight turns proved tricky, although all managed to stay upright.

Overall it was a great race - although it was cold the hot soup, bread and sweet treats seemed to warm a few people up. I'd like to say a massive thanks to all those who helped out on the day and to the committee for organising this event.
