The inaugural South Island Challenge Cup was fiercely contested over the weekend in a head to head battle between Arawa and Otago clubs on Lake Hood in Ashburton.

The weekend was used as a great opportunity to do some development racing and the first few races were used to determine the ability of paddlers rather than using age groups.  They are then filtered into race groups and points are allocated for the first three placings in each group from then on.

In amongst the standard 200m and 500m races we had an 800m race (un-laned for the first 300m), some mixed team boats, and three relay races which proved the most hottly contested of the weekend!

Throughout the two days points were very close, with only 1-3 points separating the clubs throughout.  At the end of the day on Sunday the clubs were neck and neck with Arawa narrowly taking out the win by just one point - first to put their name on the trophy!

A great weekend of racing and a lot of fun.  We look forward to seeing more South Island participants at the North Island Regattas in the future.
