We are very happy to announce that Aaron Osborne will be joining Canoe Racing NZ as our Performance Development Manager, starting on Monday 4 February.

Aaron joins us after seven successful years at Canoe Slalom New Zealand, during which he set up the CSNZ coach development and Paddle Passport programs, served as coach of the National Performance Squad and Team Manager at the Rio Olympic Games, and was instrumental in setting up the Vector Wero Whitewater Park as the training venue of the NZ squad. He has spent the past two years as CSNZ’s High Performance Manager.

The Performance Development role will cover athlete and coach development as well as recruiting new paddlers to our sport. Aaron will be based primarily at CRNZ’s HP Training Centre in Karapiro, and will spend time travelling around NZ visiting clubs and events, and working with other organisations to increase the flow of new athletes into kayaking.

Aaron is a passionate kayaker and has paddled in many disciplines, including sprint, slalom (as a NZ team athlete), whitewater and, most recently, ocean ski. Of the move from Slalom to CRNZ, he says “I’m looking forward to working with another great kayaking community to help develop coaches, athletes and, most importantly, help further develop kayaking so more New Zealanders can experience this amazing sport.”

Gordon Walker, Head Coach of the CRNZ Women’s Program, was involved in Aaron’s recruitment. Gordon said “It’s great that CRNZ has secured another quality person to join the team. As a coach who primarily supports HP athletes going to pinnacle events it is always challenging to try and find ways to both support the next crop of athletes coming through and build the sport’s participation base. I am really excited to work with Aaron to grow and develop our coaching base, and create a great space for the cohort of younger athletes within our sport.

Whilst Aaron’s departure is a loss for CSNZ, he plans to remain engaged in the slalom community. We look forward to further strengthening the relationship between our organisations, and with other disciplines, to create as many opportunities as possible for kiwis to paddle.
