New Zealand paddler Scott Martlew saved his best until last, finishing eighth in the KL3 200m final at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
In the sport's first appearance at the Paralympics, Martlew clocked his fastest time of the competition at Lagoa, finishing in 43.921secs, just 4.111secs behind Ukrainain gold medalist Serhii Yemelianov.

"I'm very happy with how I've performed over the last couple of days, with each race being faster than the last," Martlew said. "I'm so glad this dream became reality and I've been able to share this journey with you all."

Martlew was only called into the New Zealand Paralympic team two weeks ago, following the Russian suspension. He made a measured start in his heat, before finding his speed in yesterday's semifinals.

The KL3 final was the fastest of the day, with Yemelianov beating Tom Kierey (Germany) by 0.1 seconds. Caio Ribeiro de Carvalho (BRA) got a thunderous cheer from the partisan crowd when it was announced that he had got the bronze medal.

“I feel wonderful, everything ended up as I planned, all the athletes in the final were very strong and in the last few seconds of the race I gave all," Yemelianov said.

The final brought to a close the two-day paracanoe programme, although the future looks promising, with Va'a competition expected to be added for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to go alongside the kayak events.
