Rebecca Cole and Briar McLeely have powered into the A final of the under-23 K2 500m at the canoe sprint junior world championships in Belarus overnight.  The North Shore paddlers, 11th in this event last year after just missing the final, used that result as motivation this time around, leaving nothing to chance by finishing second in their semifinal.

They clocked 1min 49.939secs to be just 1.5secs behind the Romanian pair of Florida Cuita and Daniela Varona, comfortably booking a place in tomorrow night's final.

"I was pretty speechless after the race and felt huge relief, as we really wanted to make the A final after just missing out last year," McLeely said. "Keeping that on the down-low and focusing on the basic job of pulling our boat past our blades sure paid off and we can't wait to see what the final day brings."

Their under-18 K2 500m teammates, Mana pair Tess Allen and Danielle Watson, made the B final in their division, finishing seventh in their semifinal with a 1:55.690 time.

Arawa's Shani Clark was fifth in her under-18 K1 500m semifinal, also qualifying for the B final.
A large chunk of the 200m sprint racing was lost in the afternoon, after thunderstorms rolled in over the Minsk course, but not before under-18 paddler Quaid Thompson and under-23s Karl McMurtrie, Samalulu Clifton and Britney Ford all progressed through to their respective K1 semifinals, joining Ethan Moore andJake Koekemoer from the under-18 K2.
