The last of the kayak crazy 10km series races before the Champs was hosted by North Shore Canoe Club at the new venue of Greenhithe estuary boat ramp.

The early morning start was greeted with perfect conditions and a high tide which was enjoyed by a good turn out of approx. 30 paddlers of all ages and abilities.

Racing started at 8am for the 10km followed by an 8.05 am start for a 5km option. The 10km consisted of a 5km lap which looped past the start line to provide some good viewing to the parents and supporters who turned up to check it out.

A hot start saw an early lead bunch of half a dozen paddlers break away and push the pace over the full 10km. Leads changed multiple times but it was the strength and fitness of the young bolter, Usain (Jordan) McLaren who broke away in the final 500m to claim the win in a time of 46min 10sec. A blistering time for a course that was probably just over 10km. He was closely followed by multiple category winners including his Dad Simon winning the Masters, a K2 boat, Andrew Mowlem taking out the Open Men's and Rebecca Cole the Open Women. (See race results for all category winners and times).

It was really good to see some new paddlers giving the 10km a go for the first time as well as the more experienced paddlers turning up and pushing each other to the final stages of the race. A special thanks goes out to all the organisers and time keepers, and those who helped with the BBQ and baking for the end of the race. We hope to utilize this venue again and bring the race back next year. Good luck to everyone who is racing at the 10km champs in Rotorua next weekend (Saturday 27th August, 11.00am start, registration 10.30am at Boyes Beach, Lake Okareka, Rotorua).

And check out the sweet photos here from the race thanks to the Austins.
