The younger age groups kicked off first, completing 2 laps of the course. The older age groups started 30min after, with a large front pack forming and the rest of the field slowly spreading out over the first of 3 laps. While the front pack of Scott Bicknell, Quaid Thompson, Sam Newlands, Andrew Mowlem and Sam Roy shared the leads, there was plenty of posturing and tactical moves within in. Quaid Thompson made his mark in this regard, often making moves leading into the turns and creating havoc at times. However, no one capitalized on the posturing at the turns for most of the race, favouring on biding their time until the last lap.

Andrew Mowlem fell off the front pack after taking a spill in some rough wash, allowing the rest of the group to pull away. While the first half of the last lap saw Sam Roy looking strong, Sam Newlands was in his element, showing his marathon racing experience on the final turn. He manoeuvred himself to the front on the final turn, allowing himself and Scott Bicknell to drop Sam Roy and Quaid out of it. Quaid held on to take 3rd from Sam Roy and Scott was able to wear down Sam Newlands to take the title.

There was plenty of posturing within the remaining packs, making for some tight racing and good learning in the lead up to the National 10km Championships next weekend. While the wide turns and river flow meant tackle decisions had to be made, chasing the wash would ultimately be the aim of most paddlers.
