First Kayak Krazy race of the season

Karapiro 2.jpg

In the first of the CRNZ Kayak Crazy 10km events, 43 competitors from Tyros through to septuagenarian's battled it out on Lake Karapiro.

The fog lifted just before the start to reveal warm sunny conditions with a hint of breeze. After an exciting mass start, a lead group of four emerged after lap 1 containing eventual winner Ben McCallum of Waitara. By the end of lap 2 the finishing order had been established, with Ben leading from Tim Waller of Eastern BoP and Sean McCarthy and Scott Bicknell from Karapiro. Ben's time including nine 180 degree turns was a slick 47:25.

Leading U18 women Samalulu Clifton and Hannah Baker diced it out for two laps before Clifton took the win with a lead of just under a minute with a fast 51:20 time.

Logan Ferguson was heard at the water's edge to be a reluctant starter, but lead in the Tyro's with fine technique.

The hard luck prize went to Kim Harker who did the longest warm-up but unfortunately missed the start by about a minute. Apologies to Kim from the race committee as we didn't see you were missing!

Many thanks to everyone for travelling to the race and to our time keepers, boatmen, mandarin growers, soup potager and BBQ chef.
