Not only was the 23-year-old the first New Zealander to race para-canoe, in the sport's first appearance at the games, he also went on to reach tonight's final with a classy semifinal race at Lagoa.

In the race of his life, Martlew clocked 44.28secs to finish fourth in the KL3 200m semifinal, just 1.4secs behind winner Rob Oliver (Great Britain), with Martin Farineaux (France) and Irish veteran Patrick O’Leary also qualifying for tonight's final.  Despite strong headwinds, it was nearly a 2sec improvement on his heat time.

Earlier, Germany's Tom Kierey set a scorching pace in the first heat to take the win in 42.345secs, with Roumania’s Lulian Serban also qualifying directly for the final. Brazilian local Caio Ribeiro de Carvalho delighted the home crowd by winning the second heat in 43.033 seconds, with Serhii Yemelianov (Ukraine) finishing behind the Brazilia, Martlew opened up with a carefully-measured fourth-placing in 46.02secs, meaning he raced the semifinal just 55mins later.

Martlew will be the third-youngest in tonight's final, with only Kierey and Yemelianov younger.  The race starts 10.10am in Rio (1.10 am NZ time).
