Delight for under-23 K4 paddlers

New Zealand’s next generation of K4 paddlers provided the bright spot on a tough opening day at the under-23 and junior canoe sprint world championships in Pitesti, Romania, overnight.

Kim Thompson, Rebecca Cole, Elise Legarth and Britney Ford have made Sunday’s A final of the under-23 K4 500m, squeaking through with a third-place in their semifinal, heading off Australia by less than two-hundredths of a second.

The Kiwi crew went out hard over the first half of the race and were only hauled in by France and Poland in the closing stages.
“Today went really well for us - we came out of the heat with a new personal best for our maximum speed and time (1:38.76), which was a good confidence boost for us. The semifinal also went well and we were stoked to be on the right side of the small margin separating us and Australia. We had an awesome start and just managed to hold on to the end.”   Thompson was delighted how the crew had executed both races.

“We are really stoked to have made the A final,” Thompson said. “It was definitely a tough couple of races, with all the teams really going for it in the heat, then fighting it out for the final spots in the semi.”

The rest of the New Zealand team in action found the competition challenging, with the junior women’s K4, the under-23 men’s K2 and individual paddlers Ben McCallum (junior K1 1000m), Hannah Baker (junior K1 1000m) and Quaid Thompson (under-23 K1 1000m) qualifying for B or C finals.
