Amendment to the Men’s Open Sprint Selection Policy

The CRNZ Board, acting on a recommendation from Selectors, has resolved to amend the Men’s Open Sprint Selection Policy. The amendment will give male athletes who achieve A Finals (top 9 placings) at the Under-23 World Championships the opportunity to be considered for selection to the Open World Championship team.

CRNZ recognises that selection policies should be changed mid-season only in exceptional circumstances. However, we were concerned that, as no male athletes met the criteria for selection to ICF World Cups, there would have been no further opportunities for our men to compete in international open events in 2018. We remain committed to supporting men’s kayaking, and we recognise that our men’s team is in a rebuilding phase. Therefore, we would like to maximise opportunities for our young athletes to prove themselves on the World stage. It is also relevant that there are currently no active male athletes over 23 years old. As such, no athletes will be disadvantaged by this amendment.

Notwithstanding this amendment, the overriding test for selection remains the same. That is, in order to gain selection to the 2018 Open World Championship team, male K1 athletes will have to demonstrate that they have the capability to achieve a top 12 placing in an Olympic event at Open Worlds. Crew athletes must demonstrate either that they have the capability to achieve a top 12 placing at Open Worlds, or that they have the potential to qualify and achieve a top 8 placing in the 2024 Olympic Games and that selection would provide a suitable opportunity to continue their development towards this objective. In short, this amendment provides an extra opportunity to meet selection criteria, as opposed to lowering the performance standard required for selection. This reflects our belief that selection to a New Zealand open representative team is an honour that should be reserved for our highest performing athletes.

We wish male athletes in our under-23 team every success in making the most of this opportunity.
