It is with pleasure that I announce the following appointments:

Alan Thompson
Programme Leader & Team Manager
National Squad (exc Olympic Athletes), U23, U18

The Programme Leader & Team Manager under the direction of the CRNZ High Performance Programme will plan, monitor and evaluate the National Squad (exc Olympic Athletes), U23 and U18 programme and campaigns.

Alan is no stranger to canoeing having been involved as a competitor, Selector, Team Manager and administrator for many years. As President of Poverty Bay Kayak Club he has been the driving force behind the clubs recent success. His aim in taking on this role is to ensure that there are clear pathways and opportunities for athletes to achieve international success.

Gavin Elmiger (Auckland), Leigh Barker (Christchurch)
Regional Coaches
National Squad (exc Olympic Athletes), U23, U18

The Regional Coaches, under the direction of the Programme Leader & Team Manager, will provide hands on coaching and athlete support.

Gavin Elmiger – Auckland Regional Coach
Gavin has over 20 years experience in the sport as both an elite athlete and a coach. Gavin has coached from club through to World Championship level and in 2009 coached the NZ women’s K2 to finals at the World Championships in Canada. Gavin also has experience as a Team Manager, Selector, Official and an administrator.

Leigh Barker – Christchurch Regional Coach
Leigh has been involved in kayak racing for nearly 20 years as an elite athlete and a coach and is well known for the years of coaching and development work he has done at our largest club, Arawa Canoe Club. Leigh recently attended Oceania Canoe Sprint Championships in Sydney Australia as Junior Coach with excellent results
